Nestled in a rustic canyon with a winding road on the eastern edge of Bel Air, Beverly Glen is a close-knit community of 600 residents. Although it sits squarely in the middle of Los Angeles -- one of the nation’s busiest urban centers -- here you feel as though you’re away from it all. As a cool breeze stirs the air and sycamores whisper back, you may see a doe and fawn high on a woodsy hillside. On a starry night you can feel the stillness usually experienced in a dense forest. You may wave to a neighbor, someone you’ve known for years on a first-name basis. A resident’s association, a community center, annual social activities, charming homes and gardens, convenient markets and stores and friendly neighbors -- Beverly Glen may be the ideal community.

The Fair on Sunday June 12 has openings –  let’s not have the “Oldtimers” do everything all the time.  Do you like people, are organized? That is all it takes.

Food Coordinator (you don’t actually have to cook, just coordinate volunteers) and Set-Up/Clean-Up Boss (everybody will chip in!). call or email me – Elke, 818.448-0277 social@beverlyglen.org.  The food coordinator arranges for people to call for contributions, arranges for things that get bought to be purchased, schedules the volunteers for the day. The Set-up/Clean-up Boss coordinates the volunteers and pick-ups (all are available) to bring the various elements to the yard, set them up and take ’em back afterwards.

Arroyo House ~ Vineyards and Gardens
Framed by ridges and steep, chaparral-covered slopes, bridging a watercourse that merges with nature is Arroyo House, an architectural gem, conceived by UCLA architecture professor, Barton Phelps, and his wife, attorney Karen Simonson with a garden court set in a grove of native oaks.  Paths from the house pass by the streambed through a redwood grove then ramp to a grass parterre riveted by vineyard terraces. Rising in steps toward the ridge, three giardini segreti frame secret views down and across the arroyo.

2519 Perdido Lane

David Scott May
Orchards and Hike to Overlook of Stone Canyon Reservoir
At the top of the steep Perdido Lane David will be the guide through his orchards of a great variety of fruit trees. He will give a brief presentation on what does well,  and some on care, pruning, harvesting. The first part of the walk is mild and mostly level, covering about one acre of meadows, orchards and cactus.  For those interested David will guide the adventurous on a 15-minute walk each way to the top of the ridge overlooking the Stone Canyon Reservoir, wear good walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat and bring your binoculars or a camera, as on a clear day you can see Catalina Island.  Children are welcome but need to be able to walk up some steep trails.  Park on Beverly Glen Blvd. near Perdido or on lower Perdido.

See you tomorrow!

Protestors – What To Do, Who To Call

0

Posted by ROBGWebsite | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 03-22-2011

Many Glenites have recently noticed many organized protestors on the Glen the past several weekends.  As all of us respect freedom of speech, we also respect privacy.  RoBG inquired with West LAPD on what residents can do when protestors are on the Glen.

BACKGROUND

The protests we have seen stem from one main issue, animal testing.  For the Glen, it has to do with either testing done at UCLA and staff that live in the Glen associated with animal testing or private companies (unrelated to UCLA) that perform animal testing and protestors protest people who work for companies associated with the private companies, that live in the Glen.

WHAT TO DO

As the vast majority of protestors generally try to be peaceful, there are still some that can turn violent.  In this, DO NOT attempt to confront or deal with the protestors yourselves.

WHO TO CALL

Depending if the individual they are protesting is with UCLA or not, determines who you call.  If you do not know, contact LAPD first.

West LAPD Non-Emergency Dispatch – 1-877-275-5273

West LAPD Watch Commander – 310-444-0701, press 0 and ask for the Watch Commander

UCLA PD – 310-825-1491

Additional contact information for LAPD can be found at our prior post on this, http://beverlyglen.org/2011/02/01/west-lapd-points-of-contact/.

Lastly, if you are at home, stay inside, let LAPD or UCLA PD handle the situation and if appropriate, note any suspect activity to report to the police when they respond.

If you have any questions, comments or thoughts, please comment to this post.
